John,
If you have to stop in Harrisonburg for any reason, like a small gas tank leak, give us a shout.

Saw that, sounds fun. We're new enough to this boat that we have yet to "raft up" anywhere with anyone. I'm guessing that day/weekend at Dobbin's will be a circus and not the best place to learn this new trick. I'll do a better job watching the sight for other raft opportunities and chance to meet you all. Jeff

Jeff, where are you guys located? I saw what looked like a blue 240 launching on Sunday from the community ramp in Chelsea Beach. Was that you?
Keep an eye on this thread, and if anyone is going to raft up there I'm sure they'll post here. If they do, don't hesitate to join in. Don't worry about the whole learning thing. Most of the time all you need to do is get close and toss a line.
And if you're looking for the Crownies on the Magothy, head down to Eagle Cove (it's just past the magothy narrows, behind Gibson Island). There's a bunch of us that are on this site hangin' on the hook just about every weekend and we're always looking to meet new Crownies. Look forward to seeing you out on the river.

Thanks for the heads up on the regular Eagle Cove location. I'm familiar with rafting, just haven't done it yet with gel coat that I'm making payments on. Took our first excursion up the Severn last Thursday with lunch on the hook in a sweet little cove on the west side. Naturally I was obliged to do my first turn at Ego Alley (much to my wife's chagrin). I figured 10:30AM on a Thursday was a good time to see how tight it really was. No issues. Such a beautiful day and we had both rivers to ourselves. Little chop coming home in the Bay but the rivers were like glass. Surprising more folks weren't out.
We're located on the west side of the Magothy about 200yds north of the split with Old Man Creek. Hope to meet you and other Crownies in the near future. Jeff

Just make sure you have BIG fenders and you'll be fine at raft ups. Plus you have the extra benefit of using zero gas while rafting up. Rumor has it that one of the Chesapeake Crownies only fills his tank once a year.

Hey John,
There's liable to be a couple of us playing Bob & the no gas man this year. I've done my fill up and am wondering how sails will look on "ID".
Hey Jeff,
If you're leary of the gelcoat & raftups, you can always try Tony C's patented walk up manuver. I don't have one at work, but there's more than one of him walking with his boat & the 1st mate on the top of the cuddy...

Ok, several replies at once here (fun how everyone wants to include the "new guy"). Big
fenders...got 'em. Folks in the store commented that the size I chose
are "a tad" larger than needed for a 24 footer. I'm ok with that. They
came in handy on several piers and I'm sure I'll be glad to have 'em
for raft ups. Just what is "Tony C's patented walk up maneuver?" Yes,
we're maybe 200 more yards south of the burnt down Riverdale Restaurant
site. Nothing there. Wish someone with a vision would come in and build
a fun, uniquely "Magothy" restaurant (whatever that means...I suppose
just something the locals would adopt that's somewhat "Jimmy Buffet
meets the Chesapeake"). We could walk to it once or twice a week and be
"locals." With a 7/8 tank fillup costing $170, I figure my 4 hour ride excursion to and up and down the Severn (1/4 tank) cost ~$50. I feel I got my money's worth. We have discussed that if gas prices to up too much more, we can push back off the lift, coast 50 feet, drop anchor and have lunch, read, sunbathe, oh...and consume various liquids (do powerboaters drink Mount Gay rum with the same fondness as sailors or must I go to 2nd favorite, Landshark Lager while on the Crownline?). Then we'd fire it up for the 20 second ride back to the lift. Wouldn't take much effort to clean it afterwards I suppose. Thanks to all who said hi. Jeff

Note to self: Jay Thompson likes beer.....and food. Brilliant! Sounds like he's Lutheran. ...and here I thought it would be so difficult getting to know folks and learn about new friends.

OK well the walk up manuver was developed because I was hung over along with my crew....it was 100 degrees, I wasn't waiting 3 hours for Bobby D to color coodinate the boats in the raft up and my wife told me quote " if you don't park this boat and let me get in the water I'm going to ***** die"
Last raft up I put $180 in the tank at Tomes ran down to the Magothy than over to Red Eyes put $110 in it there than ran back up to Tome's and I have a 1/4 tank about 4 hours of running

See, my learning curve continues. Raft ups need to be color coordinated. Who knew? Don't all the colors start to look the same after 3 or 4 rum and tonics? "I was hung over along with my crew..." Are you SURE you're not sailors?

Jeff,
Welcome to the group.
Some of us might be a bit slower but we sure are not sailors. Just watch one of the now famous raft-up anchoring maneuvers when a storm comes up and 6-15 boats tied together pull the anchors loose and must re-anchor in a hurry. If we had to raise the bed sheets to get moving the direction at an angle to the wind, it just would not happened!
You might want to read through the past Rally threads to learn about some of the night time activities - who knew people would wake up in the morning with their boats that they were sleeping on moved, would have the porta-potties turned into life rings or who might leave the dock after a nice lunch ignoring the stern line until the cleat ripped loose from the resturant's pier.
