I just heard that a barge with a crane working on the Rt 70 bridge over the Manasquan River collapsed thjis afternoon and two people were killed and others thrown into the water.  I can't find any additional info yet.

A 37-year-old worker who died last night after plunging into the water from a capsizing barge has been identified as James P. Lovely of the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen Township, officials said.

Lovely's body was recovered from the Manasquan River shortly before 8:30 p.m., said Petty Officer John Edwards, a Coast Guard spokesman in Atlantic City. He was found near the barge.

Lovely had been working on the barge used to collect rubble, dismantling the old Route 70 bridge between Ocean and Monmouth counties, when the 20-by-50-foot barge overturned shortly before 4 p.m., State Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones said.

A "push boat" operated by Chris Romano, 32, of Brick also capsized, Jones added. Romano also fell into the water, but he got out of the water safely.

Preliminary reports suggest the barge was weighted unevenly, and it flipped after Lovely unhitched it, Jones said.

The search for Lovely involved two helicopters and five boats from the State Police, the Coast Guard and local police departments.

The old drawbridge is being torn down because a new bridge connecting Brick and Brielle opened earlier this month.

    Re: Barnegat Bay Boaters

new member here.i have a 26 ft deckboat(love it).i also have a problem with mildew this year.asked why i have a problem and tech said i washed boat just before he shrunk wrapped it.but after cleaning it today,i noticed it was the worst in the head.then i remembered that i had a problem with the motor under the floor in the head.to pump out the water below the head.i also remembered i had the battery out before i washed the boat.i wonder if the water laid in the bottom all winter, causing the moisture to enable the mildew.

also wondering if anyone has had any problems with the left over ethanol in the gas tank.has anyone noticed any problems.     thanks   bill

    Re: Barnegat Bay Boaters

you are not alone!  I had the same mildew problem after unwrapping my boat and it was also worst in the head.  And I had three containers of the drying chemicals throughout my (enormous Crying) cabin.  The marina operator apologized and blamed it on himself for not properly venting the cabin by leaving the forward hatch open a little while the boat was wrapped.  Better luck to the both of us next season.  Meanwhile,  remember that mildew spores don't disappear easily and really do a thorough job cleaning the cushions, vinyl,  and all of the hardware in the head.

Guys, check at West Marine/Boat US or Bass Pro or an RV place.  Starbrite sells these anti-mildew bags you hang.  They don't work by absorbing moisture but apparently release a chemical that prevents mold spores from being able to grow.  They're great!  Been using them for 10 years and never had any issues with mold or mildew.  I keep them in compartments year round.  They're about $8 for a 2 pack.  They hang in cardboard sleeves that remind you of those old fly catching deals.

Mike:  Thank you for the tip.  I'm also trying something new this season,  using the air dryer device that stays on 24/7 while I'm not on the boat to prevent moisture buildup.  You took a chance suggesting the bags.....what if I thought the black dots everywhere was a decorative improvement?Big Smile

    Again, thanks!

    Re: Barnegat Bay Boaters

My shrink wrap went on prematurely last year. I had to get into the boat to get the batteries and some stuff from the cabin last fall. Apparently he put the shrink wrap on after a rain and when I went into the cockpit (I have a door for the shrink wrap), it was like a rain forest. It had been closed up for a week (the week was warm and dry) and I thought that the vents in the shrink wrap would have vented most of the moisture out by that time. It was dry in when I went in last week, just mildewy

I always open up all compartments (and head door) in the cabin for the winter. One place that accumulates water on 242s is in the shower sump area. When I opened that compartment up, there was a half inch of water and it was loaded with something green growing. I dried it up with a towel and sprayed it with Tilex. I put a 1 quart Tupperware tub with about 1 inch of Calcium Chloride (the stuff that you spread on the sidewalks after a snow) and one of those blue box things…whatever they do...in the cabin before I left. Anyway, my cabin was fine as far as mildew is concerned. What is interesting is that the Tupperware was filled to the brim with water. Next year I am going to get a 5 gallon bucket and put in a couple of inches of Calcium Chloride and see what happens. Also going to check the shower sump more frequently this summer.

That No-Damp Dehumidifier stuff is essentially Calcium Chloride

The blue box things are Calcined Clay. What does that do?

    Re: Barnegat Bay Boaters

thanks mike; i think i am definately going to try those bags.also alot of the no damp containers, which i had 4 of spread over the boat.also considering getting fitted for a canvas cover.how does the mildew problem do with a canvas cover as compared to shrink wrapping.i would think the canvas should be alot better.

also still waiting to hear from boaters how they made out this winter with storing the gas with the ethanol in it.has anyone come upon any problems.

    Re: Barnegat Bay Boaters

    Hey Bill

Stored my boat with 1/2 tank of gas or more treated with the Star-tron stuff. Uncovered the boat had less gas than I stored it with. Started it yesterday for the first time, ran fine for three hours on the hose. Got up this morning went to the station and filled it up the rest of the way. Dropped it in the river and went for a 4 hour cruise, not a single problem or hiccup. I used 3/4 of a tank.  I think it is more hype than need be worried about. I just think after that stored tank the object is to just use the boat as much as possible and don't let to much gas sit in the tank.

    Good Luck

    Jay
