Neil - I'll be heading to Gaylord end of the month for our annual golf fest (15th year?). Love the area - and the courses.

I guess I was wrong then.. Embarrassed

Maybe they just don't post that much on here.

I also went to the Red Bull Air Races but on Saturday and it was terrible. The weather was awful and they ended up canceling the races due to high winds. It took my, what seemed like forever, to get downtown and cost me about $300 in fuel only turn right around. We ended up at Gull for about 3 hours and then headed home.

Todd, one problem with the inland waterway is there is not enough hotel/camping to house everyone.  Torch Lake has the same issue.  The other problem is the drive for many/most of the attendees.  The SE Michigan CL dealer is doing a rally in early August on Lake Charlevoix.

There is actually quite a bit of lodging on the Cheboygan end....  there is a big motel on the waterway as well as other motels... and there is waterways campground, pier 33 (i think it has a new name now) marina and party store with rental slips, not to mention the rental homes/cabins on the waterway....  The nice thing is if it was planned for the cheboygan end, then the larger boats could take a trip over to mackinac island and such....   Orion marine used to do a small rally there, we went the last year they had it, it was alot of fun....  just didnt compare to the national we went to last year at Norris....  now that was fun!!!!!

It's great for a regional rally, but not big enough for a national.  I stayed at Pier 33 marina with the Orion crew for a number of years.  It was barely big enough to handle that rally (60 or so boats), so it could not accomodate 200-300 boats for a national.   It sure would be cool  to have it here so everyone can see water clear water is,  but unfortunately, I don't see it happening.

Fred - I'll bet that was cool (Red Bull). I was considering heading down there but couldn't pull it together. I believe I've seen you post on the Lake St Clair website - I'm a long time lurker there -it's an "entertaining" site.

Yup, I'm on there, and it is entertaining...  Big Smile

Yes, Red Bull was VERY cool!  I hope it comes back.  We rode down there with a few others from the LSC site.

Yeah the weather was less then great this past weekend (although Sun got better later on) - sorry about your experience.  I've never made the trek down to the Detroit River - about how long does it take? From say Gull or Metro. I'm a lot more familiar with the northern part of the lake (we keep ours in a canal near Deckers). Thanks

It's about 17 miles from the entrance of Metro to the Detroit River.

Re: Doesn't look like Crowline is that strong in Michigan

I know I am nowhere NEAR Michigan. I am in Tennessee and was asking the same question. I live in Chattanooga but the closest Crownline dealer is in Knoxville over 1 1/2 hours away. When people ask me what kind of boat I have and tell them "Crownline", 9 out of 10 people have never heard of it. I don't care though. The quality is great but the only issue here locally is if I wanted to sale it. Most people here are "in love" with Sea Ray, Four Winns, and of course the person who wants a lot of junk for their money seem to love Trashliner, er, I mean Bayliner. Anyway, I have seen 2 other Crownlines in Chattanooga and this is my 3rd season with it. Good day mates and may the weather be with you!!

where would you reccommend that we launch? we will be sleeping on the boat so we don't need to be by a hotel?

Re: Doesn't look like Crowline is that strong in Michigan

    Eddy,

We launch out of Burt Lake State Park.  There are two launchs there and a pretty good size parking area.  I recommend that you get there before noon as it tends to fill up on nice weekends and the park will turn you away.  Another option is Howe Marina right on Indian River.  Last year I believe it was $10 for the day.  I would not recommend Indian River Marina as it used to be $20 a day to launch and park.

We always launch at Burt Lake State Park....  we camp alot in the summer, so its free with a state park sticker.....  nice launch too.... we have never been turned away, however, i have seen them ask people to park in a different area once the lot is full.
