Hi Tim,
Welcome to the Team Crownline owners forum!
Yep, we usually boat at Lake Anna and occasionally the Chesapeake Bay. We put in at Anna Point Marina and hang out in a cove near dike #1 on the public/cold water side. The water over on the private/hot water side is just too warm for me during the summer but it may feel pretty good right now. Give us a shout the next time you hit Lake Anna, hopefully the water level will be better by then.

Hey, Phil.
I see you are in Palmyra. I assume that is Fluvanna County. I'm going to Charlottesville next week for an interview. I have a 2001 202 5.0 B3 that I will be coming with me. Is Lake Anna the only option for me? Is the first boat launch on the Potomac too far for day trips? Will the 202 be too small for the Potomac and Chesapeake? I live on Lake Lanier, GA now and am sick about not being on a lake anymore.

Hi John,
Lake Anna is the closest boatable body of water near Charlottesville. The easiest way to get there is take I-64 east to exit 143, turn left onto Rt 208 and follow it through the towns of Louisa and Mineral until you reach the lake. I usually launch at Anna Point Marina, it's the second business entrance on the lefthand side of Rt 208 after you go across the lake. The lake has some skinny water in some areas of the lake when the lake is at full pool. I expect the lake level is down a couple of feet so watch out. Also, the area around/under all the bridges (except the Rt 208 bridge) are no wake zones and the DNR keeps an eye on those areas.
For the Potomac....I've never launched or boated on it. It would be about a 2.5 hour one way tow from Charlottesville to get to the Potomac. Boating on the Chesapeake in a 202 can be a "little interesting" as the water conditions can change pretty fast.
Another option would be the James River, east of Richmond. It's been a few years since I have boated on it but Osborne Landing has a nice public launch ramp.
When you get up to Ch'ville, give me a call (434 906-2873) I've got a map of Lake Anna that I will give you so you can avoid some of those skinny water areas.

Hi John - Lake Monticello also has a small lake that would be OK for a 202 (at least convenience wise). Phil's boat is a little too big, but I recall seeing quite a few 20-22 footers. We lived there 2002-2004 - very nice area, and nice amenities. I think the lake is only about 350 acres, and gets busy on the weekends, but is OK for skiing, etc. when the traffic is low. It has quite a few fingers and alot of shoreline, but not much of a main body. I think its about the only realistic option if you want to live on a lake around C'ville. Lake Anna is definitely your best bet for a fairly close, decent sized lake. Also, Lake Gaston is just a few hours south if you want some different scenery. Good luck, and enjoy the area!

John,
Lake Monticello, huh..........we've called it home for the past 19 years. It is one of the more affordable areas to live. Housing in the Charlottesville/Albemarle county area is noticably more expensive. Greene county, north of Charlottesville is reasonable but traffic on Rt 29 is a major headache. As Chad indicated, LM is a small lake and can get crowded on the weekends. It's patrolled by the local Coast Guard Aux and they tend to go a little overboard, so I've never had my own boat out on LM. Mainly because they don't allow anchoring and flopping out in the water. So we always go to Lake Anna, which is about a 50 minute tow. Give me a shout if I can help you with anything.
Another lake of decent size for boating is Smith Mountain Lake near Bedford/Roanoke. It's about a 2 1/2 hour tow from LM.

Chad, thanks for the info.
Phil, I told my wife about your response and we're not as sold on LM now as we first were. We like to find unoccupied coves on Lake Martin, throw out the anchor, tie-up with friends, and swim. Even our dog gets into it. Well, this all may be for not anyway, depending on if I get the job or not. Thanks for the help.
John...

This is Tim from Fredericksburg.
Warm weather allways gets me thinging about hitting the lake. I went down to the marina this weekend. Glad to see the Lake level has somewhat recovered.
We will have to hook up this summer.

I'll agree, "We will have to hook up this summer."
If you normally don't boat at Lake Anna, take it slow as there are plenty of "skinny water" areas. I've got a lake map that I can give you if you would like it.
Right now I'm gearing up trying to get the trailer ready to tow the boat to have the outdrive alignment checked. I lost a battery over the winter for a dead cell so I need to get one of those too.
