20 Hour Service / Oil Pump

My dealership charges $275 for a 20 hour service.  They basically will change the motor oil and filter and replace the drive lube.  So, I am going to do it myself.  It all looks fairly straight forward.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a pump to pump out the oil with?  I have the 5.0L MPI motor with the pump attachment on the dipstick tube.

What else should I do for the 20 hour service?  I can't find a consistent answer on how often and how much to grease the gimbal bearing.  Any sugestions?  I think 100 hours is the next BIG service.  I read somewhere about people removing the outdrive...sounds like a big project.

    Nathan,

The 20 hour service used to include checking engine alignment, gimbal, oil change and filter.  I think they changed it to a 100 hour service pack.  If you are going to change the oil yourself just get one of the oil pumps from West Marine or your local dealer.

If you have any doubts about the cost, just ask your dealer.  They should be able to provide you with a list of covered items.

Read your manuals as well.  They should list what to do when greasing the gimbal.

    Good luck,

    Kerry

Re: 20 Hour Service / Oil Pump

I think you pump the gimbal about 10 pumps at least once a season with the right grease.  Merc gimbal grease of course.  Merc now calls for a 100 hour checkup or end of first season.  It's not a bad idea to change the oil and gear lube but to check alignment now seems too early.  I'd wait a bit on some of the other things.  If your season is about over, you want to change the water/fuel separator and fuel filter if you have one.  I use the Tempo oil filter pump.  Overton's sells it.

Re: 20 Hour Service / Oil Pump

For the 20 hour check all the manual says to do is to change the oil/filter and change the drive lube.  The 100 hour service will probably be at the end of next summer for me.

I will do the oil change and gear lube change and park it for the season (after fuel stabilizer, draining the raw water, and fogging the motor!)

     Thanks!
