    Flagpole that stays

Anybody know if there is a flagpole that tightens into the perko base like the stern light does?  I have the overtons one that just sits in the base but I want to fly my pirate colors at full speed.

    Thanks    Cool

    Re: Flagpole that stays

I've always shied away from the ones that go in the light socket for fear that the vibrations would cause the brass tips at the bottom to break off.

I've got a mount from West Marine that works great on the ski bar.  It's made of stainless and looks nice, even if the pole isn't in it.  A 17" mast is enough for a bow rider.  I had a taller one but it broke (too much wind on the flag) so I shortened it and it works great now.

    Re: Flagpole that stays

If you have a flag that can stand that kind of speed I would like to know where you bought it at.   I have gone through 4 flags in the past 3 years and it seems that if you get above 30mph they start to tear on the corners and start to fall apart.  I fly the pirate flag as well and I even had a heavy one like the car flags are but they are only rated for about 40mph.  My wife jokes about my flag but I fly it with pride.  I told her I was going to make everyone wear eye patches but she informed me I wouldn't have any friends left.   The patches are in the glove box.!  I was always told that if your going to fly a flag from the stern base then it should be the smaller 12X16 inch. anything bigger could damage the base from the pull of the flag in the wind.  If you google  Pirate flags  you can find some pretty cool websites that sell them and they're not just the typical jolly rogers

I have the same problem with my flag.  I posted my solution on another site, with a picture.

Thanks Mike - i just ordered that stainless clamp on one - i hadn't seen one like that before and it should work excellent.

Bryon - i have always been a Pirate at heart and also fly a 3X5 Pirate flag under the stars and stripes year around until either the Iowa Hawkeyes or Notre Dame are playing.  Although my wife rolls her beautiful eyes and says "whatever" - I know she likes it.  I get nothing but Pirate compliments and smiles from friends and the dudes in the neighborhood - it's a good thing.     Cool

    Re: Flagpole that stays

We went through a flag pole or two.  In fact, I believe that Coy saved ours one year as it was floating alone in the lake!

We have resorted to zip tying our flags to the bimini top.  It has worked well for us!

Chadley, mount it so that the cap screw isn't showing to the back of the boat.  They look really nice.  I had to put a cloth around mine and clamp it a little with pliers as I was tightening it.  On the screw that holds the flag, I replaced mine with a thumb screw.  Picked it up at the hardware store.

    Re: Flagpole that stays

Mike, where did you mount the flag holder and how do they mount.  I've never screwed any holes in the boat yet and would like to get one of those holders and mount it on the opposite side of the stern light so I could fly my Pirate Flag on one side and the Husker flag on the other.

Hey Chadley,    AAAAAAARRRRRR   once a pirate always a pirate!!!

    Re: Flagpole that stays

It's mounted on the grab rail on the back of the boat.  It's for flying the smaller flags, not the big boys.  No drilling on the boat.

    Re: Flagpole that stays

Chadley, I was loving reading all the discussions about flagpoles until I got to the Iowa Hawkeye part!!! I am an ISU Cyclone and a pirate; so I can let you slip on that mistake in judgement!!! lol

I was thinking about flying my flag on the bimini pole?  Would the waving of the flag damage the SS stand? Any thoughts on how big of a flag I could put on the bimini?

Also, if you ever visit any of the SE cities such as Charleston and Savannagh you will find TONS of pirate flags with great tag lines on them!  Maybe you could search websites of shops in those cities too.

    Re: Flagpole that stays

I have flown 12”x18” flags on my bimini poles with no problem.  You can get clips for a flag that wrap around a bimini pole from Overtons,

     http://overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Charlevoix_Flag_Clips_fit_standard_3/4_flag_light_pole&r=view&i=37672&aID=

Actually, the noise that flapping flags make at 30+mph is pretty loud and can be annoying after a while………

Randy,  I like that flag set up.   Where did you get the mounting brackets for the large tubing on the tower?

    Re: Flagpole that stays

I got them from Samson Towers when I had my tower installed.  They are similar to the speaker mounts.  They were machined wrong and not usable, so I bought 5 ($15 ea) to make tower flag mounts out of them.  I got aluminum tubing from  the hardware store for the flag poles.  The ball on top is a  1" dia superball.

You can get misc. tower harware off the internet also...
