Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
So is the only difference between "marine" speakers and auto speakers water resistance? I've got a nice pair of Alpine 6.5" that I'm considering replacing the two factory Sonys with. The factory location is under the drivers/passenger side dash, so it's highly unlikely that they'll get any moisture (if they do, I've got bigger problems than ruining speakers).
Of course, from there, it's a slippery slope as I add the 8" Bazooka...
Also, my 180 BR only has the two speakers under the dash area. Anyone know where the 2nd pair goes when factory installed? The back of the stereo looks like it's already wired into the bundle for four, so installation shouldn't be too bad.

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
Most car audio equipment works fine in a family boat unless it is left out in the elements for a while. Auto speakers with mylar (plastic) cones will be OK…no paper cones.
In my 202 with SS seating, the rear speakers go in the back seat base facing forward. The hole was already there, just covered with carpet. I upgraded the fronts and put the stock speakers in the rear location.

An additional difference is magnetic shielding. But for your application that may not be of interest...

Dale,
I also have upgraded the stock speakers with auto speakers as well as 2 subs and 3 amps. The auto speakers are far less expensive and also sound alot better than the marine speakers that I heard.

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
Flippin' sweet! I just checked, and sure enough, I can feel the holes through the carpet!
So was the wiring there somewhere too? On my 180, the back bench flips forward (hinged at the base), but I can't locate any wires. Also, how do you prevent things from damaging the wires/basket/cones on the speakers mounted in there?
Magnetic shielding shouldn't be too important in that location. As for sound quality, I haven't compared it various speakers, but I know that the 2-ways that I've got are decent, and anything is better than just two under the dash area. If the lines are back there somewhere, this will likely be the simplest, cheapest upgrade I've ever done.
Thanks all!

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
I had to run wires but it was a simple task. Just zip tied them to all the other wires and cables running under the gunwale from the helm to the back of the boat and under the flip up rear seat.......
Speaker grills to protect the front and there is nothing under my seat to damage anything else.....

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
Dale,
Thanks for starting this thread. I have an 07 180br and had no idea there were pre-cut holes in the rear bench. My stock speakers are sitting in my garage collecting dust....now I have a reason to clean them off and put them back in the boat!!!
Thanks guys!

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
4 U 180 guys - my 04 had wires for extra speaker in the wire bundle up under the interior gunwale on the starboard side just forward of the back seat. sort of a purple colored wire. On the port side - again purple wire - in wire bundle up under glove compartment dash.....FYI

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
I took a quick look and didn't see the bundles, but I'm going to take a closer look in a bit.
As for the existing "marine" speakers, I can see some of the things that make it different - don't know if it's consistent across brands though.
• Plastic basket • Plastic grille • Coated leads from terminals to coil • Plastic cone
I suspect that all of these things are UV/salt water resistant as well. Since I only boat in fresh water, and they'll be mounted under the dash area, the Alpines will be just fine. They sure sound a heck of a lot better!
Thinking about this a bit more, the holes in the seat box would make it easy to add a sub back there. Put a Bazooka (assuming it'll fit) under the seat, cut the holes and put a couple of fake grilles over the holes to let the sound escape. It wouldn't be the most accurate sounding solution, but it'd fill out the bottom end. If you put a connector on the leads, you could easily yank the Bazooka if you needed the space.
Now to find those bundles...

U dont even have to cut those holes out to make it sound good. I have 2 subs (10's) and 3 floating amps under the rear bench and it sounds great. But sometimes I do put a washcloth under the seat to keep it propped up just a little so the bench doesnt have that slight rattling sound. It makes the lows more clear.
Thats a good idea though.

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
Well, I figure the Alpines I've got do me more good on the boat than on the shelf in the garage (where they've been for 3 years). . If/when they puke, I'll probably just replace them.
Just got through putting them in, WOW what a difference. Less muddy, brighter.
I'd like to put the factory ones under that rear seat, but for the life of me can't find the factory wiring. It looks like I'm looking for a purple pair and a green pair, but I don't see anywhere in the bundle that it exits. I've been up and down the gunwale, and the bundle's closed all the way. I do see a pair of lines (red and purple) with connectors just hanging there in front of the panel that the speaker mounts to on the starboard side, and on the port side it looks like there are a pair of blue wires that have been clipped right at the bundle near the panel that the speaker's mounted on. I'm figuring these are for couresy lights, since the color doesn't match the stereo leads and I can't think of what else it might be.
If anyone's got factory speakers in the back seat of their 180 or similar, I'd love to know where the lines leave the main bundle. That, and what route they take to get to the box under the seat. No reason to deviate from Crownline's preferred path that I can see. If only I could locate the darn wires!
Thanks!

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
Look under the glove box & U should find a "big black tube" full of wire to run aft to the new speakers. Then on the starboard side (driver) look up under the cowling at the end of the rear seat U should find "extra wire " for that speaker. (on the drivers side follow the wires aft & just before the wire bundle goes into the engine compartment U should find speaker wires) I think they might be purple colored. I have a 2006 19 ft and i had to cut the holes under the back seat, no big deal. If you cant find the wires let me know, I will try to help you, they are there and not that hard to find.

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
Ok, just checked again.
On the port side, the bundle comes around the bow and ends at the panel where the speaker is mounted. The thick bundle goes down to a single pair in a smaller bundle, which connects to the speaker on that side. At the point where it goes from a thick bundle to the smaller bundle (running to the speaker) I can see two green wires that have been clipped off. Looks like that may be where the lines would have been to run to the back.
On the starboard side, the thick bundle runs from the dash all the way back to the transom, and nothing branches off before that. At that point, it's zip-tied to the transom, and there are a number of branches, all of which seem to go places with the exception of two red lines that have connectors on them. Unless the leads are buried amongst the bundles tied to the transom, I suspect they've been clipped off somewhere along the way as well.
I should mention that I've got sunsport seating, and I'm assuming you mean that the wires should be at the end of the bench under the gunwale. Where did yours branch off the main line? I can try and open up the bundling to see if I can find the clipped leads.
It's almost at the point where I should just run my own lines. Actually, for the port side, it looks like I'll have to do that anyway. Here's hoping that I'll get lucky on the starboard side...
UPDATE:
I found the lines on the starboard side. As I suspected, they were simply clipped off at the bundle. They leave the main bundle behind the panel in the engine compartment.
So it looks like I'll go further up the bundle (towards the bow), pull the lines back, add on to them, and run it back to the rear seat. On the port side, looks like I'll have to add on under the glovebox and run them back to the seat. It's a shame they were just unceremoniously clipped off. It's not like the bundle is different, so I guess I don't see the big deal about just tying them off. But whatever - small annoyance on an otherwise excellent boat.
Thanks for the help all!

Re: Marine vs. auto speakers/2nd pair on 180 BR?
Well, it's all installed and wired up. Sounds much better this way. Only downside is that the rear seat doesn't open as far as it used to - the front edge now rests on the speaker grilles. Since these holes are there for the additional factory pair, I'm assuming that's typical.
Other than that, how do you run your lines out from under the back seat? I ended up putting the wires in black bundle wrap, zip tied and screwed to the underside of the seat frame (so it's mostly hidden when the seat is open), then down the front starboard corner on the inside, coming out between the seat frame and floor over to the starboard gunwale, disappearing behind it. From there, behind the side panels to the transom area, then zip tied to the main bundle back to the helm. It's the least visible way I could think to do it that didn't interfere with the flip-forward accessibility of the rear seat. I can post pics if anyone's interested. Looks decent.
