  I have a 2004 Dodge 2500 Heavy Duty with the 5.9 Cummins.  We pull our 2004 270CR all over the Midwest.  Last summer we pulled it from Indiana to Lake Powell.  We drove 3,500 miles in all.  I will tell you it is the finest tow vehicle I have ever had, hands down.  This truck pulled our boat up Wolf Creek pass from 3000ft to 12,000ft effortlessly.  It has been the best decision I have ever made.  We only use it for towning the boat so I only have 24,000 miles on it.  As for the Fords and Chevy's  no comparison at the time.  The Cummmins had much more grunt.  Well thats my .02 worth.

You are all convincing me that we need a new tow vehicle.  We have a Chevy Tahoe that is getting up there in age.  We had a few longer trips last year pulling our 202BR where we barely made it over some steep hills.  The whole vehicle shakes when towing over 60mph, too, but that's probably another issue. 

We are looking at quad cab pickups: Chevy/GMC Duramax 2500 with Allison tranny, Ford F250 Powerstroke, or Dodge 2500 Cummins.  I see good comments on all in this thread, but can we go wrong with any of these?  Are some years better than others?  And do we need to go diesel to get a solid tow rig?  Our 5.7L Vortec V8 gas engine just isn't enough.

Heath, only you can decide if a diesel powered 3/4 ton vehicle is right for your lifestyle.  How much do you trailer?  How often?  How long do you like to keep a vehicle? 

I had a '99 Yukon with the 5.7L.  All I can tell you is the new 5.3 in our '07 Yukon is quite a bit stronger than the 5.7 was.  I would think any of the 1/2 tons with that engine with the right gear ratio should tow your bow nicely.  Won't have the power of the diesel that's for sure.

Heath, I would think that a diesel would be a little overkill for a 202.  You'd be fine with one of the newer Tahoes/Suburbans.  They have a lot more power and a lot more features than the older Tahoes. 

However, if you're thinking of upgrading the boat in a few years or are just set on getting a 3/4 ton truck, you really can't go wrong with any of the big three.  I'm partial to the GMC Sierra that I have, but to each his own.  They all have their proponents and detractors, you just have to find the one that "floats your boat".

I agree with O'Man that the newer Tahoe / Burb's are a great towing platform.  Our 2004 Tahoe had the 5.3 Vortec and it did a great job with the 202 and a decent job with the 236.  However, I didn't like the Tahoe on the longer trips because of the suspension and tires.  Always felt like the boat was driving us.  And since we'll probably upgrade to a larger boat in the next 2 - 3 years I wanted to get a 3/4 ton diesel.

 I've got a 2006 F250 with the 6.0 Powerstroke and couldn't be happier.  I got a great deal at the end of the year and paid around $37K for a loaded up Lariat 4X4.  You can't beat the towing mileage of a diesel and the resale value will always be a bit higher than a comparable gasser.

i pull my 250 with a  2001 chevy 1500 with 5.3L, 96,000mi, no problems although i did put drilled rotors on the front brakes, it would probably be tough going through mountains but works goo for me, and i never tow over 60mph.
