Randy, I didn't ever recieve the pictures. albanymusic@juno.com Check out the PBS story on Quagga Mussels in Lake Mead. Same kind of thing as the Zebra Mussels but much closer to home. We need to warn people whom boat outside Oregon to take extra care in washing down the boat after a trip. This could happen to shasta too. Very scary stuff. http://www.opb.org/programs/ofg/segments/view/1622

We have just posted 38 placemarks to be seen in Google Earth. You can view the information by clicking on the link above, then click on "view in Google Earth" and you can see our progress. The goal is to provide information to build confidence and promote safe boating at Detroit Lake. The Oregon State Marine Board awarded us a Grant to design a brochure to be handed out at the Detroit Boat ramps and parks this summer. John

Re: Detroit Lake, Oregon 08 Season Open

I called Kanes and they said they are opening the log boom to the marina on Friday. They will be accepting boats on a limited basis, so call first if you are planning on taking your boat up for the season. The water is at 1552 on May 1, enough to make all the ramps accessible. So let's just hope the sun comes out to help kick off the season.

Re: Detroit Lake, Oregon Mongold State Park Open

Spent last weekend at the lake.  It looks good, not much debris.  We didn't take the boat up though.  There were quite a few boats on the water, mostly fishing.  I caught 3 Sunday morning. Sunday was great weather.........

    Detroit Lake

We were there Sunday too. What a great day. There is still snow on the shore in blowout. I have never seen snow on the shore in May before. I was there on Tuesday and we were the only boat on the lake at 6:00 PM. I was at the Ranger Station to work on the brochure for the lake and they said they started sweeping the lake yesterday 5-6. The lake is almost completely filled now. Ready for fun.

    Re: Detroit Lake

Randy, If you haven't ever checkout out the waterfalls on Heater Creek and Kinney Creek, you should. The water was coming into the lake at a rate of 5500 cubic feet per second last time the temperature reached 70 degrees. With 90 degrees forcast, they are lowering the lake to accomodate the extra runoff. It is still plenty high but it will be interesting to see how fast it fills during the heat wave. If you don't still have the posts I made in Google earth, just go to google and search for bbs Detroit Lake. You can look at the locations of the falls. You can also go to panoramio web site and search for Detroit Lake and see the falls I am talking about. We went to both places last weekend. You have to anchor a little ways from Heater creek and walk up the steep bank but it is really raging with water. I got my boat a little dirty from our shoes but it was worth it. I hope to go Saturday and come back Sunday. My son is in a play Saturday night. The best part of the heat is it will warm the frigid lake up a little bit. We might see you around up on the water. Have a great time! John

Well, I don't think we'll make it to Detroit this weekend.  Maybe Fern Ridge.  Going on a MC ride though.............

    Re: Detroit Lake

Randy, we went to Detroit on Saturday. We checked out all the falls. There is a lot of water coming into the lake. The water was brown around Breitenbush and the N. Santiam. The water is really cold. My 17 yearold son went swimming without a wet suite to prove he could handle it so I pulled him around on the tube for awhile. It was fishing derby weekend. There were a lot of people fishing that were probably not too happy with us for racing around but that is what the lake is for. Hope your weekend was good. Did you make it to Fern Ridge? John

    Re: Detroit Lake

We made it to Detroit, but not with the boat.  On Sunday, we and another couple rode our Harley's up to Kanes and checked things out.  Lake looked good. We made reservations at Kanes for the rally weekend (July 31-Aug3)  We had lunch, then home.  While riding, we could feel the air temperature drop quite a bit when we got close to the river and lake.

    Re: Detroit Lake

Randy, It's memorial weekend and raining like always. We are going up but I bet you are going to skip this weekend in your boat. I am trying to think of some other activities to do around Detroit becuase it doesn't look like boating will be that much fun with the rain and thunderstorms predicted. We were there last weekend and what a drastic change. There will be people everywhere camping in the rain. Have a great weekend. John
