    Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

I have been having a problem with my stereo that started last summer.  FM stations would cut out and not work for a while then work fine.  The problem progressed.  It was like you unplugged the antenna. No FM and AM now. This spring I replace the antenna and the problem was still there.  The CD player works fine.  I'm thinking that it is an internal problem.  Any suggestions?

I'd just replace it.  If you can wait 2 or 3 weeks I will be replacing my stock Sony unit with a new ipod capable unit and I would be willing to send you mine for free.  Nothing wrong with it.

    Ryan,

I'm having the same issues with mine 2001 202.  If Terry doesn't take the radio, I'll be all over it... just let me know.  I would gladly pay you for it!

No worries.  I should be picking something up in the next 10 days.  I'll post back in here when I do and it will be up to the first taker.  I'll only ask for shipping charges.

Guys, if any of you have the transom remotes, try unplugging it from the back of the radio.  When those fail, they will lock up the radio.

Re: Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

I've tried unplugging, resetting, cleaning contacts.... everything I know to do.  Mine is the original radio on my 01 202, so I guess I can't complain.  If I buy another Sony Stereo, can I just plug it into the wires thats already there?

Re: Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

I swapped out my factory Sony with an ipod capable one a few weeks ago.  The harnesses matched and it was only a fifteen min. job.

Re: Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

Yes Tony.  I think the last harness change for Sony was in the mid-90's.  I know my 1993 and 1999 head units used different harnesses but an '01 is the same as today.  The cage will be different but that's no big deal.  Just a matter of bending some tabs.

The new iPod direct models (420iP and 820iP) are way cool!  They give you full iPod control plus charging.

Thanks Mike... now my last question.  Does the Sony radio need to a specific marine model or will any one work?

Re: Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

I think if you have a "wet" boat (water cannons around, out in rain, overnighting etc...), then get a marine version.  If you're a "dry" boat, then a regular one can be ok.  I have never used the marine versions and have never had a failure but I really try hard to keep that area dry.

Re: Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

I just replaced my Sony with a pioneer because the faceplate on the old sony quit working.   As you all probably know the old harness was not compatible with the new but there was a disconnect and all I did was unplug the old harness clipped the wires one for one from the old harness plug and installed the new Pioneer harness to the plug.   MAKE SENSE??  the biggest issue was the ACC and the Constant 12V  had to get out a volt meter.  I have used up my budget for this year but I am hoping to put in some better Marine speakers, amp. and sub next year the biggest problem I see right now is putting the heavier gauge wire in for the speakers.  The wire is in a protected plastic tube but I don't think I can use the old ones for a pull because there is too many other cables in there as well.  any suggestions??

Re: Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

    Rob,

You don't need to worry about upgrading the speaker wire when you upgrade the speakers.  There isn't enough wattage to really make a difference even if you install an amp for the new speakers.

You will need to run your own speaker wire (12 ga or larger) from an amp to a sub but for your other speakers it isn't necessary.

Re: Sony Stereo Radio Not Working

Rob, in my opinion, the factory wire is heavy enough for upgraded and amplified speakers.  I know they've started using a wiring harness they purchase from Mercury for the whole boat but I helped install a new amp into Rick Plies boat last June and found the wiring to be fine.  I was able to tap into the speaker leads back by the throttle.
