We are new to boating and are looking to add some of those PVC guide-ons to the trailer for our Crownline 19 SS.  We see many different heights -- from around 4 feet (48"), to about 5 feet (60"), and even up to around 6 feet (72") or more.  How tall should we use?

I too have the trailer guide-ons. Whatever height you choose, I reccomend adding the nylon wrapped, foam cushions for the uprights. Without them, the PVC will leave little white scuffs on your shiney new gel coat. I got them at Overton's.

Hi Ed, Just curious.  All the new trailers supplied here for Crownlines & most others are drive on trailers and therefore do not have to be fully submersed. Guide arms are then not necessary. We have only had Guide arms on submersible trailers where the boat has to be floated onto the trailer.

I contemplated guide-ons last year, but in reading other posts, figured out that I wouldn't need them.  (We've got a 19SS/Prestige trailer.)  I always completely dunk the trailer to get the bunks wet.  Then I pull forward t get ~1" of the front bow bunks to stick out of the water.  That usually gets the fender even with the water line.  That makes for a straight shot to get the boat on the trailer.  Ours is tricky in certain light conditions since the trailer is black.  It's all preference though.  I think the guide-ons would just get in the way now.

Gary:  As Jeremy says, it's personal preference.  Here where we normally boat, it's not that uncommon to have 25 - 30 MPH winds and very busy boat ramps.  Even our first time out, along with the owner from our marine dealership, it was not too pleasant of an experience trying to get our boat lined up in 30 MPH wind gusts to go onto our trailer (it is a Heritage bunk model, manufactured for our Crownline boat).  We'd just like all the help we can get! 

There are posts we searched and found here on the Crownline Forum about people who are using PVC guide-ons with their Crownline trailers, but we'd just like some of you folks to please share with us what heights you are using with your boats ... 4' or 5' or 6' or ?

I think ours are probably 4 ft. I like them to extend above the rubrail as that's what I use as my guide -keeping the rubrail about a fingers width off each guide centers it pretty well on my trailer. I find them invaluable.

Ed, I appreciate the difficulties, we actually have similar problems, congested ramps & the tide can be running against us as well. From your comments & others our trailers are obviously different. With the self centering rocker rollers on the trailer, once the boat is partly on it self centres, With storng wind or tide, we just attach a stern rope to the effected side.& increase the power, still not easy. We have had the guides on previous trailers.  No criticism intended. All the best.

FYI...they are steel pipes covered with PVC tubing.  PVC alone is not strong enough to guild your boat on..........

The height will depend upon the boat and the trailer. You want about 18" above the rub rail with the boat on the trailer.

Just in case anyone is interested, after conducting research on many different models we decided to order our guide-on posts from Ve-Ve Incorporated in Minnesota.  Their web site is located at http://www.veveinc.com/  We decided to get their 65-inch rather than 47-inch model, but we may shorten them later by just a few inches since that might be the more ideal height for our boat and trailer combination.  Always easier to cut some off, than to add some on  :-)
