Federal Lakes Recreation Committee for Detroit Lake.

I joined this committee last summer. They are working with the Forest Service, Marine Board and other agencies to dig a channel between Piety Island and the flats for safe passage during the summer. They are also working to extend Mongold boat ramps another 100 feet and build a new low pool winter ramp that will let larger boats like ours, launch safely in the winter. I have placed 39 place names for Detroit on Google Earth which should be live after April 12, 2008. I have also placed over 40 photo's showing hazard areas when the water is low so boaters can study and learn what to look out for. I would guess far more people read these forums than post. Thanks, thats great...........but unfortunately, of the dozen or so local boaters (mostly crownies)  we boat with, I am the only one that looks at this site much at all...........I'll spread the word.......

Randy, Things are great. Business is good. The lake is rising and I am looking forward to many long weekends at Detroit this summer. You should check out Google Earth after April 12, and see the photos I uploaded. The snow we got in Detroit this winter was crazy. Most of it is melted away but where they piled it up it will take a long time for it to melt. If you take pictures of the lakes or places you visit, you can upload pictures too. It is easy and a good way to build enthusiasm for the many beautiful places we have in Oregon. I would expect the water levels to remain good later in the season this year. Last year they started letting out water in the first part of August becuase of low snow pack. This year should be a different story. Thanks for responding and perhaps we will see you at the lake. Glad to hear all is good........ya we can't wait for boating.  We head for Shasta in mid June for two weeks, we are sooo ready to go. 

I use google maps and earth to check out places all the time.  I use it a lot to look at the lake and the camp grounds when making reservations........Hope to see you on the lake this summer.....

Randy, I would think Shasta would have plenty of water this year. Gas prices might take a little bit of the fun out of boating this year. We go for three weekends in the spring between fill ups. Once we start pullin the toys it is $100.00 a day. I just call if vacation and do it any way. Google Earth has really been great for searching out landmarks. I haven't checked out Shasta yet. I guess I better go play with that. We never have made it to Shasta. We are kind of home bound at Detroit with the cabin there. I like it and it makes it easy. John

Ya, Shasta is our big summer vacation and even though gas is high, it's vacation.  We go down with 8-10 local families and stay at Antlers RVin.  We go in June cuz it gets our warm weather boating season started a month earlier than in Oregon.  The water is great and warm.  Warmer in June then Detroit ever gets......you should try it some time......It's about 20 times bigger then Detroit.

Randy, My new neighbors at Detroit go every year and tell me how great it is. The warm water would be nice. My youngest son went to Shasta with our neighbors from Salem and he had a good time. My wife doesn't like it hot so I think it would not be so good for us. I uploaded 96 pictures of Detroit Lake to Google Earth in various stages. Summer and Winter. Check out the link for Federal Lakes Recreation Committee Detroit Lake and then look for the link "Detroit Lake in Google Earth". Let me know what you think. I have spent a lot of time loading pictures and writing descriptions, so boaters can learn how to better navigate the lake. I don't know if you have spent much time at Detroit when the lake is low but it is drastically different. Are you and the kids still playing musical instruments? John

John, you should try Shasta at least once.  We go in mid June for several reasons. We started going in 1999. This will be our 10th year.

1. First weekend kids are out of school.

2. Water level highest for season. Historically drops 6"/day in June and 12"/day in July and August

3. Not too hot yet, usually 85*-95*.  Out of the (about) 100 days we've been there, only about 5-6 have been over 100*.

We go to Detroit in the winter also, just don't take the boat.  We were last there in January.  Had some great weather, took the 2 grand kids and did a bit of fishing. The lake was quite low. I've got pictures of the State Park boat ramp that is 500 ft from the water.

 The kids are all out of HS now and on to College.  They play their instruments, but not formally.

Randy, Thanks for looking at the photos. My wife thinks 80 is too hot. Maybe some day we will make it down there. I looked at shasta on Google Earth last night. It is even bigger than I realized. I didn't realize there was so much lake to the west of the bridge on I5. My kids are sophmore and Junior in High school. They are both so envolved in music, drama, sports that it is impossible to get away. We don't go to Detroit as much as I would like to becuase of all the activities. This is their time to shine and I am ok with that. Send me some pictures when you get back. I was looking at the marine board web site and they were suggesting using a non alcohol based fuel additive on each fill up becuase of the ethanol in the fuel now. I think it is ok if you use the boat every week but they suggest using an additive if your boat has been idle for two weeks or more. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ad some every time just to make sure no condensation ever gets in the engine. Have a good weekend. John

Shasta has about 375 miles of shoreline.  It takes about an hour to go from one end to the other at 35-40mph.  With current fuel prices, we won't be doing that much this year.  I'll send a few pictures from last year also...........
