I have the same problem,  it seems to depend on how recently it has been run.  1 day or 7 days.  I don't have a solution but would agree with your wife.

Our previous was the carb'd 5.7L and I'd just turn on the key, give it 3 pumps or so of throttle and leave it at about 1/4 and it started good every time.  Have you changed plugs or fuel filter recently?  Maybe it just needs a small tuning.

Does turning the key first then pumping have some advantage ie choke?

Re: STARTING A CARBURATED 5.7 MERCRUISER GM ENGINE 2000 268 CRUISER

Turning the key for a few seconds first, runs the mechanical fuel pump to put gas in the carburator bowl. Two or three pumps of the throttle works the accelerator pump to give the engine a shot of gasoline. Not being critical, but we've been driving electronically fuel injected cars for long enough that running a carburated engine is no longer second nature.

I have a 1999 carbed 5.7and it has always started fine, even after the winter sleep.  Key on for 5-10 seconds, 3-4 pumps, 1/4 throttle.  Starts every time.

    Thanks I will try that.

     Tom.....

I assume that the key on runs an electrical fuel pump to fill the bowl vs a mechanical pump.

I mis-spoke. When I said turn the key on, I intended "crank the engine" over for a few seconds. That runs the mechanical fuel pump. On Carburated engines, you typically don't have an electric fuel pump.
