    1996 210ccr 7.4 L Carburetor Won't start.

Was on the lake on the 4th and the motor just stopped.  It was like I hit the kill switch.  Had a quick diagnostic done and the tech seems to think my Tach shorted out.  The boat turns over and the tech said power seems to be getting everywhere else.  Would a shorted tach stop the boat from starting?  Thanks.

    Hola Robert!

I have tinkered and restored a few cars. I really can't see how a tach would keep an engine from starting. Maybe in newer cars with rev limiters I could see an issue, but I really don't think boats have rev limiters . . .so my nutshell version is I don't see how a tach would kill your engine. I could be wrong I have only installed a few engines, trannies and redone some suspension and electrical. So that does not make me a boat mechanic by any stretch . . .

I would guess our boats still use the magnet type of sending/receiving method. Many new cars use a laser.  I am pretty sure boat engines are very primitive in comparison. Heck I still see carbs on boats.

I believe a shorted tach will kill the engine.  There's a hot wire running to the tach (purple I believe) that came off of my 225 back in '00 and when it came off, it was like there was no ignition.  No spark at all.  So maybe that's all it is.  If you can pull the gauge cluster a little, check to make sure all the connections are on the back of the tach.

Thanks for the replies I already pulled the dash everything looked fine no loose wires anywhere, so I just took it to the Marinemax dealer yesterday.

640.00 Total not sure what the break down is.  Will get an invoice today and let ya know.  Either way just happy to get it back. Only have 3-4 months in Utah since all our lakes/reservoirs are @ 6000 ft. elevation.  Want to take her down to Lake Powell soon about 5 houre drive and the water is much warmer.

Coil is tied to the tach.....no coil, no tach......no coil means no spark.....check the basics, ensure u have spark from coil wire to distributer.
