Yes, they are close to 3M. There are 3 sand pits. The last pit down river is the deepest going into it.

Are you going to make it down this Friday night for the start of Tug Fest With the big fireworks over the river? It is quite a sight. It is an awsome weekend, my fovorite!!! No, we won't be able to make it.  Because we live so far away and with my husbands hours, we would have to plan next year.  I did go to the website as you suggested.  It looks like a lot of fun.  Two couples are getting married there this weekend. 

The Rock River finally opened up here where we live and we are planning on taking our pontoon out Sunday.  Only the second time that boat's been out this year.  Flooding was pretty bad around here.

We actually live in South Beloit, IL.  We have to drive two hours over to Dubuque to put our boat in. 

Marsha, where do you put your boat in at dubuque? We were thinking of staying at the casino/dog track hotel and putting in at the park nearby sometime. I work in the s.beloit area once in a while, we put a detour up on Il rt. 2 because of flooding this year.

We have actually put in at two different places.  One is the park you are talking about which is right by Lock and Dam 11 and the other is just south of the bridge.  I don't know the name of either of the parks.

One option for visiting Dubuque would be to launch in Savanna, IL at the park district marina and cruise the river up to Dubuque. There are a couple marinas in Dubuque where you can tie up overnight.

The stretch of river between Savanna and Dubuque is scenic and not difficult to navigate. You do have to lock through in Bellevue about 1/2 way but generally not a big deal.  With my cruiser and with a clear lock, the trip takes about and hour and 15 or so.

One advantage is that towing to Dubuque on Rt. 20 can be a pain. Lots of hills and a couple small towns including Galena that you have to pass through.  From SOBO to Savanna would be a relatively easy and flat tow.  

The marina at Savanna while not overly fancy has plenty of truck/trailer parking and  you can park overnight with little worry.

We just launched out of Savanna in July.  Two years ago we stayed at that marina.  It's nice.  Rt. 20 isn't that bad, we've done it several times.  We have taken Hwy 11 over too.

Our biggest deciding factor for our next trip was the fact that Savannah charges to launch and then so much a day to park.  When we return we usually pump out and they charged us $15.00 because we didn't purchase gas.  Dubuque is FREE and the marina will pump us out for $5.00.

Since we have a slip there, I guess I didnt realize the additional daily fees. We pay roughly $860 for our annual slip which includes parking and pumpout.

Hi Marsha,

Got home tonight after spending the entire weekend in the sand pit, (my river chart is in the boat) I will let you know the mile marker. It is a wonderful spot to anchor for days. And it does not cost a dime. The moon was spectacular and the weather is so not August like. Awesome to wake up to cool temps and no bugs or dew. Would love to have you down sometime. We are planning on heading UP river for a few, never know how long with us, days. A few issues with boat. Let us know when you might be out about the Mississippi!! We needed to come home tonight for food and river treats (junk food). will be back out tomorow. Hope you got out on some water and had some fun. Weather is still looking good. Take care. Kathy Runge

We just got back from our northern trip.  We had plans with another couple to head north but didn't actually come up with an official plan until a couple of days before we left (and then didn't have the whole trip planned).  Anyway, we had fun.  Stayed in LaCrosse (Pettibone Yacht Club) and took a day trip in one boat to Winona.  Betty Jo's has the greatest pizza!!  On the way back, ran into rain one day (Thursday) but luckily we got under a covered slip in Guttenburg.  That was our last night out and we pulled out in Dubuque Friday.  As far as this year goes, we have no more plans for the Mississippi.  We are going to Chicago this Sunday with two other couples on our boat (hope it's not too crazy down there).  After that I think we'll be done, at least money wise!  Then we'll probably spend more time on our pontoon at the local river.  Well, got to get to work

I am planning a weekend trip down to the Clinton area next weekend with some friends and was wondering if any of you have suggestions for a campground.  We will be pulling our boat down there because our friends do not have a boat.  We are looking at camping near the river at a clean campground that has all the facilities.  Any suggestions??  Also what beaches are easy to find.  I am not familier with the river down that way.  Any good resturants we need to hit while we are there??  Thanks

Thompson has a campground that is on the river, i think the corp

of engineers runs it. If you look through the thread you will find some good suggestions for places to eat and sand bars.

Jeremy, once you lock through in Clinton, you can go to the new marina. it probably isn't quite open yet, i think they were scheduled to open in October. go past the marina and once you cross under the railroad bridge, you will see the sand bar on your left that everyone usually hangs out at. If you want to come farther down river, its about a 25minute cruise at 35mph to Princeton beach and the sand pits, 2 great places to hang for the day. Between Princeton and Leclaire, you will find about five different places to eat at... Good Luck, unfortunately we wont be out this weekend, my sisters turns 30 and softball at 1 and 2pm  on Sunday...
