Anyone interested in a stereo write up? I just put in a $4,700 stereo system for less than $2,000.

I have been tinkering with stereos for years. Part time gig in high school / college to pay bills.  I recently installed a very nice system in my boat. Saved big over using the big name stereo supplier (catalog/web) and still got a better warranty. I can go over the entire purchase/installation process if anyone is interested. From install to how to buy and save big.

    Equipment Listing:

Alpine PDX-4.150 - birth sheet shows 784 WATTS RMS
Alpine PDX-1.1000 - birth sheet shows 1202 WATTS RMS
Alpine 9886 Head unit with IPOD, SAT and USB initerface(s)
Alpine RF Remote Wireless / Waterproof
    Polk Momo MMC6500 x 4 - 125 Watts each RMS
Image Dynamics IDMAX V3 12 & Custom Sub Box - 1000 watts RMS

Amp Installation Kit - boat ready
    Dist Blocks  x2
In Line Fuse Holder with voltage meter x 1
    Signal Patch Cords x 3
Speaker Wire 100 Foot oxygen free - 14
    Sub Wire - 40 foot 12 G
    Connectors - Misc

While is was in there did added a 240 AH house battery as my secondary battery.
    Battery

If I get enough folks interested, I will put it together.

    Thanks!

P.S. I even put together a playlist of 100 old school rock songs for one of my playlist.

    Robert,

I will let you spend 2K on my boat!!! LOL!!!  Just kidding, I already have a half way decent stereo in mine.  Just need to add a sub.  It looks like you put a nice system in yours.  Hope to meet you on the water some day.

    Kerry,

must agree with your sig, better to be lost on the lake than found at home! I like that . .

Anyhow, what are you plans for a sub? Which model boat do you have?

I would be very interested, I could also use some advise since stereo is my weak point.  Funny I can wire an entire police car but somehow I missed car stereo!

Great did not want to put together if no one was interested.

I will start working on the write up this weekend, could be a couple of weeks . . .  I have a bunch of pictures, I will need to organize and type up some notes. I was thinking video . . . but I would probably sound terrible. . . .

Don't turn this write-up into a life-long project. Do yourself a favour and keep it short and simple with a couple of nice pictures. Maybe add some bits along the way, whenever you feel like it/have time available. I've done a couple of write-ups myself and I've found that keeping it light helps maintaining the motivation to continue...

Yes, but a detailed boat install requires some pretty good detail. Many folks have never done a full stereo system. A system is only as good as teh installation. I have seen peeps spend thousands and have system that sounds like poo . . .the tuning and a few key selections can make all the difference. Also, I wanted to share how I purchased gear from Ebay and got a 3 year warranty from a very good source. I had an amp fail and it was taken care of. Saved thousands over need a "crutch" after they take your legs online.com.

Sounds like you have a lot of experience with stereo's.  Can I put 2 10's behind the bench on my 202.  A friend said they would be muffled enclosed like that.  He says I should mount them under the dashs.  Just wanted to hear another opinion.

    thanks

     Eddie:

I am not sure what the bench seat looks like in your 202. But I have seen many installs with subs in the trunk of a car. The frequency that subs operate at is non-directional. Placement of a sub should not matter as your ears can't really tell where it is coming from . . . .at least a setup where the Xover is below 100-120 Hz. The biggest issue; is there is enough airspace in your bench to allow the subs to operate?  From what I have seen on boats, I would bet it would work fine. There are so many large air gaps in most boats that I am pretty sure you would get good results.

What kind of subs and what amp are you planning?  Tell me about your install plans and mabye take some pics of the bench . . . I would look for airgaps in your bench seat. From what I can tell most boats have these airgaps to allow air to flow through the boat. Not sure if this is by design, but my thoughts were these "gaps"  are to assist in keeping the boat dry and free of moisture.

    Robert,

I have a 180BR so I am pretty limited on what I can do.  I could get dimensions and pictures.  I would like something self powered if possible.  Do you have any suggestions?  Ryan Nicosia mentioned the bass link system at one time.  But at 300.00 I want to make sure it is the right fit.  Thanks for any help.

    Kerry:

My opinion/recommendation may be "worthless" to some folks, but I would not recommend a tube type subwoofer. I like to tell people to save their money and do it right the first time. It always costs a lot more when you ad hoc a stereo system. Granted some folks are happy with a tube, but I often find when their ears get more “tuned” it goes for sale on ebay. Seen this with buddies that wanted to a system in their auto.

The purpose of a sub is the visceral effect. A good sub will bring music to life sort of like a captain’s call exhaust on a big block. To me a tube subwoofer is like the fart can exhaust on a 4 cyl Honda or Toyota. It just does not sound good. Again this is my opinion. There are many setups available without breaking the bank and limited space.

You could always try it and sell it on ebay if you don’t like it . . . on the flipside . . .take some pics of your boat and maybe I can suggest a “free air space” sub. You can get some pretty good sound with simple 5 channel amp and not break the bank.
