I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
Hey, I have a question . . . recently purchased a 2006 240EX with what I think is a Sony Xplod CDX-M30 (no manual for the stereo came with the boat, but that stereo matches the pictures in Overton's - I realize I may not have the correct model #). I also have (factory installed) the Sony 6 disc CD changer, extra 2 speakers, wired transom remote and the Sony premium stereo upgrade. I have no auxilliary input on the front of the stereo. I have two RCA inputs on the rear in which the 66disc is plugged into. Has anyone hooked up an Ipod to this stereo? Will it even work? Can I hook an Ipod into the RCA inputs on the back of the stereo with a special wiring adapter? If so, is something I can commonly find? I would gladly unplug the 6-disc for an ipod hookup if that is what I need to do. I appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thanks!

I will look for your stereo online to check the specs on it. Question...does the stereo have an aux input on the front face? If so the Ipod should work. there. Also, does the stereo have a cassette player as well as the 6 disc changer? If you have a cassette it's simple. Buy a cassettee adapter ...they run anywhere from $6.00 to $12.00. Plug the adapter into the headphone jack of the Ipod and pop in the cassette. That's what I am using on my boat with the portable Sirius Radio.

Front Panel Aux In / Detachable Faceplate / 52W x 4 High Power / EQ3 Stage 2 / 24-Bit D/A Converter / SAT & HD Radio, iPod control Ready Bring your Music to life even when you're out in the water with the Sony Xplod CDX-M30 Marine CD Receiver. The Sound is strong enough to combat the noise of the wind and waves hitting your boat. Its coated Circuit board and UV-resistant paint will stand up to the sun, salt, and spray. It plays store-bought and recordable CDs, and discs with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. Or connect your MP3 player to the front-panel auxiliary input. Add HD Radio or satellite radio tuners for more options, or hook up a Sony CD Changer for extended CD play. The 3-band Equalizer gives you the perfect blend of lows, mids, and highs. Add some kick by connecting amps or a powered Subwoofer to the two sets of preamp outputs.
Use the Aux for the Ipod with the cassette adapter and you will be rocking out in less than 10 seconds..Good luck.
EDIT: JUST SAW WHERE YOU SAID THERE ARE NO AUX INPUTS....MY BAD

Dan,
I'm pretty sure i have the same setup, you have to have the sony XA-300 auxillary selector. This plugs into the rca inputs and allows you to hook 3 or 4 devices to it, including the ipod. You cannot hook the ipod up directly, sony has done something so that you have to have the selector. I think I found it for like 75 or 80bucks. It's a bit of a pain but gives you the ability to hook up more devices, I think you need it for XM radio as well. Hope this helps!

Terry, I've looked on the net for owners manuals, help etc. Also, my dealership wasn't much help. Can't find anything but the newer version of that stereo. You are correct, no front input or cassette. I think I'm down to the RCA inputs on the back of the stereo. I am going to try to attach a photo of what my stereo looks like. As I said, the model number may not be correct. I was trying to match my stereo with on in the Overton's magazine. Thanks for trying.

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
Okay, did some research this afternoon. Finally found the model number and an owners manual online that I could download. I have the CDX-R30M. I think Andy is right, from what I have read, you have to spend another $100 to buy the XA-300 auxiliary selector if you want to run anything buy a sony product in your auxiliary hookup. What a load of crap. Anyway, if anyone knows any different, please let me know.
Can you plug a USB flashdrive into this selector and play mp3's?
Thanks guys for your help! Dan

Dan, the Sony XA-110ip adapter will allow you to use on ipod on your head unit. The head unit and transom remote ( if you have one ) will control the ipod. Much cheaper. I have one I'd sell. 20 bucks to your door. Let me know.

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
I think this is the same Sony unit I have in my 2006 260 LS. I have tried to hook the IPOD up directly to the RCA jacks on the back to no avail. It is a "BUSS" input. Is this where you hook up the Sony XA-110ip adapter? It looks like it would be a very easy/inexpensive way to hook up the Ipod if it truly works. How long is the cord that attaches to the Ipod itself? I am wondering where I would mount the unit and the Ipod.

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
Bruce, I purchased the Sony XA-110ip adapter brand new off of ebay for around $11 including shipping (I think it retails for around $50). But I have not had a chance to plug it in yet. From what I have read, you should be able to control your Ipod through your radio controls. I plan to play with it this weekend to see how it works. Reading the installation instructions, it connects with a BUSS cable and two RCA cables all into the back of the stereo. It apears to be a 2-3' cord for the Ipod. I'm not sure how and where I will mount everthing just yet. I may mount everything inside the compartment behind my stereo along with the Ipod (out of reach of water and sunlight) or may figure a way to run the Ipod cord outside in a visible area. I'll play with it this weekend at the lake and let you know what I figure out. Dan

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
Dan,
I am pretty sure I have the same stereo unit that you do. I contacted Sony via a web-chat and was told that this adapter would not work with my/our stereo. I would love it if Sony was wrong. Let me know how things work out for you.
Where did you get your unit. If yours works, I might try and get one and hook it up while on Norris Lake next weekend.

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
The reason it won't work with some of the radios (the 110ip that is) is because they lack the buttons to give you control over the iPod. When using the 110ip, all controls at the iPod itself are lost and you have to be able to do menu, scroll etc...on the radio face. The XA-300 may be a better option in many cases as it just gives you an AUX input (5 actually) so you control the iPod and get good sound.
Some Sony head units had what was called AUX LITE which meant you could plug RCA's into the BUS input.

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
You need this adapter...http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Gp9jgIOGkAp/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=127AUXONS
and also a 5 dollar mini jack to rca's at walmart. One end plugs into the head phone jack on the Ipod, the other 2 rca's to bus audio. This adapter at Crutchfield is really a dummy plug that tricks your bus control plug into activating the bus function. total 35 bucks and it works perfect. Best of all you still contol the ipod with the ipod wheel instead of the head unit ( better interface)

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
Nick,
I am a little confused by the picture as to how this unit hooks up to the RCA jacks and the Ipod. Does the larger end have RCA jacks on the back that are not shown? How does the Ipod hook up to the adaptor?
Thanks,

Re: I-Pod hookup question - 2006 240EX
Bruce, I don't think you connect anything to that PAC piece. It just plugs into the head unit and tricks the Sony into turning on the input signal from the RCA's. The Uni-Link port doesn't carry audio, just data from a changer. So, just get a mini (3.5mm) cable to RCAs and plug that into the input on the radio. The mini into your headphone output jack. Pretty simple. The only issue is if you still want to run a CD changer, then you'll have to unplug this unit and plug back in the uni-link from the changer and those RCA's.
