Help!!! Infinity Amp goes into protect mode?????

I finished installing new speakers and sub into my boat cpl weeks ago, all seemed fine in the drive and the first time out.... then last time out, the amp kept wanting to cut out, the light would flash in the protect mode.....  what gives??  I have never had a problem before, it worked fine, even turned up higher than it would cut out on the boat.....  if i let it sit off for a minute, then it fires back up?  any ideas stereo gurus????

also, one time it cut out when not even turned up past 10 when i started the engine...... any help would be appreciated, weekend will be here before we know it.....

Is there sufficient room for venting warm air? Are the batteries OK? Sounds to me as if you're putting just too much of a load on the battery...

U probably have the gain set to high. Try backing down the gain. Most folks crank this all the way up thinking it will yield more power . . . but actually just causes the amp to over heat quickly.

Here is a good "non stereo" person explanation. This is an oversimplification but gets the point across.

Another thing that will cause it to go into protect mode is if you didn't use a large enough gauge wire for your power wire.

That would be my guess. I use 4 ga. power & ground on mine, and haven't had an issue.

    Good luck!

Well, I played with it in the driveway last night....  the only thing I found out of place was the ground wire on the battery was a little loose, (guess i got in a hurry launching the first time),  seems to work without cutting out fine now.....  engine wasnt running, hopefully that wont change things....  I still need to adjust the gain down some on the main amp.....  can only turn up the speakers to like 19 w/o distortion.  I will do that today... then looks like the weekend is going to be nice, so we will try her out on the water.

     Todd:

IN most cases your alternator will create a higher output to your Amp than your battery. So the higher the input (within reason) the higher the output. The ground is certainly a potential as well as the gain being to high. Hope this cures your problem and happy boating!

Re: Help!!! Infinity Amp goes into protect mode?????

I was re-reading my post and was thinking . . .  I am not being clear on voltage and amperage. I am speaking about volts in my post above.A good alternator will deliver 13.5 to 14.4 volts.

As far as amperage that is dependent on your alternator. If your alternator can't provide enough amps, it will draw from your battery. In this case a single amp is probably not an issue . . .

Without going into to much of the charging system, just wanted to clear that post up.

Well, all seems well, i think i have some room now to actually raise the gain up a bit, i turned it down, and seems like i should go back up a little....

Re: Help!!! Infinity Amp goes into protect mode?????

If nothing else changed from before Todd, then I would think it's a simple connection issue or maybe a voice coil on a speaker went bad causing a short so the amp was pushing too much power.  Sounds like the loose ground was the issue.

Upon further review, there was actually another wire giving me problems, in the switch over to the new head unit the remote wire got a little loose, and was  setting off the protect mode on the amp as well.....   hopefully that was all it was and we are back rockin on the lake now!!!!!

Re: Help!!! Infinity Amp goes into protect mode?????

Awesome! Glad to hear you got it! It is nice when you find the answer to a "strange" problem. That little blue wire can cause lots of blues. My favorite issue with the remote wire is when peeps ask " Why does my amp only power up when I have the radio on AM/FM?"

    Happy Boating!
