    Volvo 5.7 Overheating

This is my 3rd season owning my 1997 210CCR. I have never had any engine problems until Friday night. I noticed as I was close to the marina my temp gauge was at 225 and you could smell heat, smoke, or whatever from the engine compartment. I spoke to a friend who knows a bit about marine engines and he's "guessing" it may be the water pump. We are going to buy muffs for the engine today and start from there. We will put the new water pump and thermostat on and check it out. If it still overheats he said it will be a process of elimination to track it down. Has anyone else had this problem before on the 5.7 Penta? Also, he said a water pump from Auto Zone will work just fine  and no need for a marine pump. Is this true? And does the Volvo require special muffs or will Wally World or Boaters World be OK? Thanks for the help!!

     A) Regular water pump OK?

     B) Special muffs for a Volvo 5.7?

    Thanks again,

    Terry,

Has the impeller in the raw water pump been changed/checked? This is NOT the same pump as the water circulation pump that is mounted on the front center of the engine. On the Volvo 5.7L engine, the raw water pump is mounted on the front lower starboard side of the engine. There is nothing special regarding muffs for a Volvo.

Terry, I would agree with Phil. I had a similiar problem last summer with my 5.7 Volvo. By replacing the thermostat and the impeller she was as good as new. I would start with those two first. Both are rather inexpensive as well.

    Good luck

    Re: Volvo 5.7 Overheating

Thanks for the replies. Took the boat to my friends shop at his car lot, bought me a service repair manual and we are going to tackle the project tomorrow. I'm no mechanic so he will walk me through it. I've never had the impeller replaced and this is my 3rd year with the boat. Also going to do all required maintenance (which I was unaware of EVERYTHING until I bought the manual)  and hopefully get it done in time for the 4th so we can pop some cold brew pops on the water. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it ends up.

BINGO!! Impeller had less than 1 blade remaining. It was tore to shreds. $45 later and we are on the water!!

    Re: Volvo 5.7 Overheating

That is good news!!!!! The impeller is definitely an item that requires replacement every 2-3 years.

Did you look for or find the missing impeller blades? The missing impeller blades can migrate to the thermostat (or heat exchangers if your engine has one) and restrict the water flow or prevent the thermostat from closing fully. Also, keep an eye on the temp gauge and oil level the next few times out as an extreme engine overtemp could have induced other problems......blown head gasket, and thus water gets in the engine oil.
