    Trailer Vibration

I am not sure if this is "normal" or not.  My Prestige trailer (2008 190 SS) with surge brakes has a significant vibration when lightly braking, e.g. coming to a stop light.  With heavier braking, e.g. exiting a freeway off ramp the vibration is minimal and the stopping power seems fine.  Should I expect some vibration or not?

    Re: Trailer Vibration

    David,

Since the trailer is new I would contact your dealer to see if they can take care of it quickly.  I don't think there should be any vibration.  You can also go to http://www.prestigetrailers.com/ and join in on the forum there.  You will need to register like you did for this site.  Of course Byron may chime in here as he frequents this forum as well.  But the customer service from Prestige is excellent.  Good Luck and happy boating.

    Re: Trailer Vibration

I never get any vibration on my setup. I have a four disc setup . . . vibration in braking is usually from warped rotors. However this is a new setup. Can you take trailer back to dealer? Have you towed in the rain recently or hit a big puddle of water?

    Re: Trailer Vibration

You know I have never checked my trailer! Do we have drums or rotors? Now I am going to have to run out to the lake to check!

    Re: Trailer Vibration

    Thanks for the input guys.

This evening I was checking the end play of the wheel with respect to the spindle and on both sides there is some free play (about 3/16ths), i.e. lateral movement of the tire when the trailer is jacked up.

Do you suppose this would account for the vibration with brakes applied??

In order to check this suppose I would need to take the spindle cover off and tighten down the spindle nut a few turns, yet I need a new seal for wheel bearing protector.  Either that or warped rotors.

    Re: Trailer Vibration

On second thought actually it is about 1/8" play.  Should there be any play?

Dave, as Byron has suggested, give him a call. You will not be disappointed in the customer service you receive. He should be able to give you all the info you would want to know and then some that you may not....... LOL

    Re: Trailer Vibration

Our 2006 Prestige trailer for our 2007 19SS has some vibration when braking.  It's not too bad and the stopping distance is fine.  It's been like that since we bought the package new.  I assumed some vibration is normal since the rotors undergo a pretty nasty thermal shock (warm rotors + cool water) at the ramp when launching.

    Re: Trailer Vibration

My trailer (not a Prestige) does the same thing for my 180 BR.  I've decided it's due to the fact that the weight of the boat and trailer are at the bottom end of the load range for disc brakes.  I read somewhere that disc brakes were for 3,000 lbs and up.  I think the vibration is due to the brakes stopping the trailer too well at light loads.  So, when you brake lightly, the actuater gets a small load.  This actuates the brakes, which removes the load from the tongue.  This releases the brakes, which causes load on the actuator again.  I think it's a viscious cycle, which causes pulsation.  When you brake harder, the pulsation goes away because the discs don't overcompensate.  That's my theory, and it's just that, a theory.  If it was warped rotors, the vibration would also be there during heavier braking.

Please let us know if you find a problem with the system, since it appears many of us have the same issue.

As far as tightening the bearing nut, don't do that without knowing the proper procedure.  You have to tighten it to a certain torque, then back it off a little.  (Don't remember the actual numbers.)

    Re: Trailer Vibration

My curiosity got the best of me last night.  I drained the hub oil, pulled off the wheel bearing protector, removed the cotter pin and nut retainer and the spindle nut was mildly loose, most spindle nuts should be "finger tight" but this was less than that.  According to the Trailer Buddy axle service information the nut should be "finger tight" which is about 18-20 inch pounds.  I figure at the very least the bearings should be adjusted and new 50wt oil put in.

I am trailering the boat on a 3000mile round trip in 8 days, I don't want to be one of "those" people on the side of the road with one trailer wheel 100 yards ahead of them.

Now the question is....where the hell do you find 50wt motor oil as the manual calls for?

Based on the above responses, the vibration may be a "normal" phenomenon.

    Thanks!!

    Re: Trailer Vibration

I should also mention, the trailer is "new" from 2006, (has about 5000 miles on it) the boat itself is 2008 190ss....

    Re: Trailer Vibration

I just finished removing the end units, turning the rotors and reinstalling.  Byron, I received the Royal Purple hub oil today, thank you.  Just took the trailer for a test drive and it pulls and stops like BUTTER!!!. You'd never know I was pulling a trailer....had to look back a few times to make sure it was still hooked up.  It must have been warped rotors.  THANK YOU, for your time and advice guys.
