Hi.  We just purchased a 2002 202BR LPX with about 100 hours on it, our first Crownline.  We had a Sea Ray before this one.  We noticed that the boat after running it for a while and brining it back down to idle will stall after a minute or two at idle.  It doesn't diesel and the motor runs very smoothly at idle.  It restarts without a problem.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.   Also, we've had the boat out for about 1 and 1/2 hours so far and noticed the gas guage hasn't moved.  I noticed some postings on the forum about this issue.  Is it any easy fix that we can do or should we have it done by the dealer?

First off, WELCOME to Team Crownline.   

Not sure on the dying issue.  Is this a carburated or fuel injected engine package? 

On the fuel level, before messing with it, I'd run it a little longer.  What you may find is that the gauge may go suddenly from full to about 1/2 tank once it starts coming down and that after that, it may show pretty accurate.  Mine too will show full forever.  But, when coming off plane after an hour or more of running, I'll see the needle start to move.  Once it does, it'll drop to 1/2 pretty quickly and is accurate at 1/2 all the way to empty.  The most accurate reading once your needle starts dropping is usually when you're at idle and not up on plane.

Forgot to mention it is fuel injected.

We'll continue to monitor the fuel.  I have been checking it at idle.  We don't have an owner's manual so I'm not sure on the size of the gas tank.  If we knew we could also track fuel next time we top off.

Welcome aboard Doreen!

Did you fill your tank before launch or was it filled by previous owner?  Had the boat been sitting a while?  Just wondering if maybe you have some old/bad gas.  A 2002 model with only 100 hours has been sitting quite a bit.  You might burn a tank of fuel or 2 in the boat before you start digging to deep.  With a little luck that may be your only problem.

Hey Doreen you should have a 40 gallon tank.  I agree with Andy, put some fresh gas, maybe some 93 octane and run the hell out of it.  Might just need to be ran, blow any trach thats in it out.

Thanks, we'll give that a try.  I didn't think it would be the gas since it runs smoothly whether we running wide open or idling.  It just seems to want to stop running when you let it idle for more then a minute or two.  Now that we know how many gallons it holds we can better manage the gas guage since as of right now it's still showing full.

Our boat has a similar idling issue.  Its caburated and "supposedly" they all do that.  I tried highger octane gas and octane booster and it has worked. My fuel gage is also not very accurate.  I took out the sender and bent the float rod a bit to make it better, but its pretty much like a toilet valve float, just inherently not accurate.  There are other types of fuel sender out there etc but you may not want to put that kind of time and money in..  I note the hours and how much gas I put in, and get an idea of how much you use per hour.. on average..

 

Update -  

We've logged at least 8 hours so far and topped the gas tank off twice - 20 gallons a pop.  The LPX does love to drink gas!  The gas guage never moves so looks like we'll be taking it out to adjust it or replace it. 

The stalling at idle seems to be getting better.  Last night when we had it out, it tried to stall, almost cutting out but then regained running again.  It did this twice so maybe it's going to resolve it's self.

I'd dump a can of Sea Foam in the tank and run through a tank of gas.  That stuff is awesome.

And if the 100 hr (yearly) maintenance hasn't been done I would do it.

-Oil and filter

-Fuel filter

-Pull off and clean the flame arrestor

-Drain and refill the drive lube
