    Engine won't power up quickly

2000 5.7 gs.  Starts easy.  Idles good, but seems a bit rough, but nothing to compare it to yet.  Runs good at speed.  Problem is that I have to baby the throttle to get the boat on the step.  If I advance it to fast, the engine coughs and I have to back off the throttle and try again.  Just starting to work through possible problems.  Wondered if anyone else had seen this and had any suggestions.  Only had the boat in the water 3 times and it has done it all three times.  I have adjusted the timing to the book, but didn't help.

    Thanks

first thing i would do is change the  fuel filter. If it is a carb, it may need rebuilt. I had the same problem and had the carb rebuilt, and it took care of the problem

I had this problem,  I could not pull up a skier.  If I took it up slowley I could get it up to over 65mph.

I took it into my dealer and they said my throttle cable was lose, they adjusted it and brought down my idel a little.

changed out the fule filter also.  The fuel water seperator only had gas in it.

    It now runs fine.

Before you start digging too deep, I agree with changing the fuel filter.

Make sure the fuel line is not crimped somewhere.  Not sure how this boat has been winterized in the past, but this happened to a buddy:  The method we use to fog the engine is to disconnect the fuel line going into the fuel/water seperator and to temporarily connect a tempory fuel line that pulls a fogging mixture though the fuel line.  After fogging the engine, he reconnected the original fuel line from the tank, but accidently locked down the band clamp on an area that actually restricted flow into the filter.  The boat idled fine, but bogged down when he punched it.  Once he figured out what had happened, all back to normal.

Really sounds like the carb to me.  Has it sat for an extended time ever?  You have to be carefull running an engine with a improperly functioning carb as you could be running it lean and risk burning a valve or melting a piston running it hard on a lean condition.  Quick way to check would be to do a plug check...run it wide open and cut the engine (don't let it idle as it will skew your results) and pull a couple plugs.

If it a carbutrated engine I would change the accelerator pump on the carb.  It is not hard to change and you should be able to buy one pretty cheap.  No need to rebuild the whole carb if everything else is fine.

dose it make a diffrence if its warm or cold motor ?? my boat did this and it was the start to a bad coil.  I forget what i paid for the new coil but it was pretty cheap and it fixed my *misfire* feelings during acceration.
