    Onboard Charger

Thinking about adding an on board charger to my 220EX. I have 2 batteries so I know I need a 2 bank charger. Any suggestion on which brand to buy and where to mount it? Thanks Jerry

    Re: Onboard Charger

I have had good luck with these:

I have them in two boats and neither have given me any trouble.  They charge and maintain so you can leave them plugged in constantly.  I don't know the layout of your boat but mine is mounted in the engine compartment because the charger is "spark proof".

    Re: Onboard Charger

I have two batteries in my 19SS  one deep cycle and then the starting battery for the non accessory related stuff.  I have a Sea Ranger charger in mine and have had good luck with it.  Mine is mounted under the back seat laying flat one the driver side of the boat.  The seat protects it from most elements.  It is elevated off the floor about 2 inches.

Couldn't tell ya where I got it I've had it in several boats clear back to my 1989 Cajun Bass Boat.

    Re: Onboard Charger

I have 4 batteries in my 240 EX!  I went with a Minn Kota.  It works great and is mounted on the back wall of the engine compartment.  It is also water proof so no need to worry about the elements.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Aaron, what do the 4 batteries power? Do you have them all mounted in the engine compartment?

    Re: Onboard Charger

Our boat sets on the lift all winter and thought this year I would install a maintance charger instead of taking the batteries out. What amp size would work the best like on the Pro Sport listed above 8,12 or the 20 for 2 batteries?  Also noticed it said not to mount to a carpeted of vinyl area.  Chould it be mounted on a board  with spacers and  if so what lenght of spacers?  Last question is do you leave the engine hatch open a little under the trap for ventilation when the charger is pluged in ?  The winter cover I use has 3 air vents in it.. Thanks Jack

    Re: Onboard Charger

I have a Pro Sport Jack and it's great.  I think it's 10 amps per battery so maybe that's the 20 amp unit?  Mine is mounted on the carpet on the side box around the engine.  Guess I didn't see that note.  Ooops.  It works great.  I don't worry about propping the hatch cause the AGM batteries don't vent externally but even then, 10 amp charging is a nice low rate so you won't get excessive gassing.

    Re: Onboard Charger

2 batteries power the stereo system and 2 power the boat.  They are all mounted in the engine compartment.  I originally had 2 batteries in, one on either side of the motor and just added 2 more to be safe.  I only have a two battery conditioner since my batteries are wired in series.

    Re: Onboard Charger

I bought a guest 2 bank.  It's the same as what they sell at BPS.  I mounted it just ahead of the battery tray on that ledge.  Works great!
