    Gimbal bearing??

I've noticed a noise in the outdrive on my alpha one. When it's idling in nuetral, everything sounds fine. As soon as you put in in gear at idle I can hear a clattering (for lack of a better term). It does this in forward and reverse and makes no difference whether the wheel is turned or not. A slight increase in the RPMs and the noise goes away and is never heard again while underway - it's only at idle while in gear.

I guess I've always assumed that the shop was greasing this at winterization but I'm now seriously doubting they were and I've never done it. The boat is a 2003. Tongue Tied Think my gimble bearing is shot or just in need of grease?? or do you think it's a different problem??

    Travis,

It sounds like the gimbal.  I would have your dealer check it out at the end of the season.  I was told that if your outdrive moves freely while on the trailer, that is a sign that your gimbal is worn.  Time to trade the old vessel in for a new model.  LOL!!!!

Travis, do you have a zerk fitting on the starboard side of the lower unit housing ring? It's the part of the lower unit that is attached to the transom. If you do, pump about 8 to 10 pumps of the recommended grease into it. I've heard the same nosie before and I pump the grease into the zerk and the noise diminishes considerably.
