    winterizing my cl 220

In the past, I have winterized my cl 180...change oil, fog engine, add anti freeze, and add stablizer to gas. Now that I have my 220 LS with the 5.4 EFI engine, how much different will it be? Do you still fog this type of engine? Trying to save money where ever I can.

Fogging is a little different. Do not spray the fogging oil down the intake as it can create problems later with the MAP sensor. Instead, mix and fill up the fuel/water separator filter with a gas, fuel stabilizer, and TC3 oil mixture. Start the engine and run it long enough to pull the mixture into the engine.

Merc service bulletin 2001-15 lists the ingredients and quanity of what they recommend for fogging the engine with. Personally, I mix up a smaller quanity and dump what is left over into the boats gas tank and/or the lawn mowers.

New Gasoline EFI/MPI Engine Fogging Procedure

    Models

All MerCruiser gasoline EFI and MPI engines produced in Stillwater.

NOTE: This change does not apply to carbureted engines produced in Stillwater or Hi-Performance

    engines produced by Mercury Racing.

    Change

Follow this new fogging procedure when laying an engine up for storage.

    Fogging Mixture

In a 6 US gal (23 L) remote outboard fuel tank, mix:

    5 US gal (19 L) regular unleaded 87 octane (90 RON) gasoline.

64 fl oz. (1.89 L) Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard oil.

5 fl oz. (150 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer, OR

1 fl oz. (30 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer

    Concentrate.

Hey, Phil. I have the 2001 Mercury 5.0 "EFI". When I think of EFI I think of the individual injectors for each cyclinder and, therefore, no carburetor. I have what I believe to be what I use to call a throttle body injector that feeds gas into what looks like a carburetor. There are no fuel injectors on the individual cylinders. Do I have a MAP sensor?

    John,

To the best of my knowledge, I do believe that a MAP sensor is installed on EFI and MPI engines. Around the years 2000-2001 is when MPI became more common so engine serial number will be useful to determine which engine that you have. I sent you a useful link by e-mail. Manual 24 and 31 should be of interest to you.

Cool. Thank you. For the last couple years I've been fogging the heck out of the carburetor thinking that it's not the true EFI, at least as I know it.

John, you can fog a throttle body motor just like a carb if you want....spray the oil into the intake until she dies. The MPI motors, just as Phil stated, are only to be "fogged" per the bulletin.

    Re: winterizing my cl 220

My crownline dealer provides three levels of winterizing.

The second option includes antifreeze but, no fogging and the third option includes fogging but no antifreeze. Is fogging required?

It's a good idea Hector.  It will help prevent rust from forming on the cylinder walls and rings.
