    Engine Issues

I've had my boat in the water several times this year with no issues. Today I filled up at a racetrack, which I normally don't do. As soon as I put my boat in the water I could tell I had issues. Boat will idle fine and run with minimum RPMs. When I go to get on it, it will take off, get on plane then immediately bog down. You can tell its a fuel issue. Almost like bad gas. I put some Berrymans in the tank, and I did notice an improvement, however its still bogging down. It will bog down and actually backfired once.

I replaced the fuel filter today with high hopes, but no luck.  It will idle fine, when I get on it, will get up on plane, then start to cut out. I had a buddy drive and I removed the arrestor on the engine. I could see the injectors injecting fuel... when it would "miss" the injectors completely stopped spraying. Its almost like something is stopping up the fuel line or preventing the fuel from getting to the injectors.

Do ya'll think it could be a fuel pump or what am I overlooking?

Guess I'm taking it to the shop on Monday.... Just have to figure out who to take it to now.

    I have a Volvo 5.0 fuel injected.

    Re: Engine Issues

Have you tried replacing the fuel?  You said you filled somewhere you normally don't and it started having problems.  I would drain the fuel and refill with premium fuel from somewhere like a BP or Chevron or somewhere else you trust and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

    Re: Engine Issues

I have not tried that. I usually fill up at a premium station.  I only put in 10 gallons.  I have since also added a can of seafoam.  I am beginning to think its a fuel delivery issue.  I have read where these engines have had issues with the injectors, I also read there is some type of sensor that can go bad as well.

Most people that seem to have had this issue have NOT resolved it.  I just hope mine is an easy fix.

    Re: Engine Issues

Wow, I just noticed we have what looks to be the exact same problem.  It sure seems like it's a fuel issue, although now I think it's a mixture issue and not a bad gas issue.  I have a definite hissing/pressure sound coming from somewhere near the flame arrestor while at idle.  Are there any vacuum lines that could come loose?  The engine seems like it's getting more gas than it can combust and so it bogs down, then it all combusts at the wrong time and I get the backfire.  Any idea what the primary sensor is that would control fuel air mixture?  ECM?

Let me know what your tech says if you find anything out.  Good luck!

    John

    Re: Engine Issues

I have that same hissing sound.  Its the fuel being sprayed by the injectors.  I actually had a friend drive my boat while I looked to see if I could see what it was doing.  The injectors will spray, and when then randomly they will completely stop, which causes the engine to "miss" obviously, then they will stary spraying again, like normal....

    Re: Engine Issues

had this problem last year with my 19SS.  I got some bad gas at a "quicky mart" in podunk tx.  Boat ran like crap and would barely plane.  I dosed it as heavy as I could with sea foam.  The sea foam is great stuff and works better than berrymans and my grandfather swore by berrymans!.  Second buy some good gas 93 octane or better.  It'll run bad for a while so don't go out planning a day of fun.  Run the snot out of it.  Once you blow that tank you should be good.  I went a head and retreated the tank after with sea foam as it has a dring agent in it.  From what I can gather, Shell sells the best stuff on the road or water with additives.  Always buy atleast 89 if not 93 octane. It takes very little water to drop the octane of ethenol blended gas.  Another idea that might be helpful is to install a "sight glass" prior to your fuel pump.  This way you can see any phase separation.  But overall Sea Foam and Deep Creep(sea foam in an aerosol can) have taken care of most of my fuel problems quickly and cheaply.  Hope this helps!

    Re: Engine Issues

I am having the same problem with my 2000 225br with a 5.7L GSI. I have checked all fuel components including fuel pressure. I sucked all the old fuel out of tank and same problem next time out. It seems to me that it is losing some sort of spark to burn the fuel as needed. I am going to continue my diagnosis before spending the 700 plus on the fuel pump setup. The  high side fuel pressure does go a little low, but my thoughts are it should still get up on plane.  Good luck and let us know what you figure out and I will do the same. Mine is throttle body injected.

    Re: Engine Issues

A update on my boat, received new fuel pump assembly yesterday. Installed it and went to the lake, boat ran like brand new, no sputtering what so ever. Since you say you were watching the injectors and they quit spraying all together when it would start to miss, I would definetly check the fuel pump relays and make sure the pumps continue to have power to them.

    Re: Engine Issues

My boat is still in the shop.  So far they have replaced plugs, plug wires, distributor.... not sure what else....

If you don't mind me asking how much was the fuel pump?  Aren't they over 600 bucks?

    Re: Engine Issues

Tony, I purchased mine from marine parts express. It listed for $650.00, but they sold it to me for $560.00. They are great people there and very knowledgable of the products. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions. What part of DF/W are you?

Where is your boat at? I live in Leonard, Texas and work in Plano. Let me know if you need any help with the boat?

    Re: Engine Issues

I just started having the exact same issues with my 2002 202br with the 305 efi volvo.  It ran fine and at the end of the day lost power wouldnt rev up when the throttle went down had some hissing and even a backfire pop or two.  I'm going to switch out the fuel/water seperator (fuel filter), fill her with seafoam and some good high octane gas and hope I can get some results.  If not I'm going to have to take it in and most likely do the fuel pump assembly, problem is they told me yesterday its on backorder till the end of the month possibly longer along with an 8-10 day waiting list at the shop.  This would mean no fourth and I have paid and planned to attend the summer splash July 17 at table rock and don't want to miss out on my first rally!  Cross your fingers the sea foam and filter work and if not its back to the mechanic...

    Re: Engine Issues

Kevin, sorry to hear about the boat problems. I was in your same shoes, went to the lake Memorial Day weekend, first time out with boat this season and would not run properly. Talk about some upset kids. Do what you want to do, but I would not spend a whole lot of money on parts until you check your fuel pressure with a gauge. Where is Devine, Texas located?

    Mark,

I took the boat to Grandpappy marina.  There is a guy named Ty up there thats supposed to be a great volvo mechanic.  Guess we will see.  I have used Marine Parts express in the past and have been very pleased.  I have family in Leonard, Grew up in Farmersville.... Small world huh
